The site has a rich industrial heritage with former uses including a coal wharf and timber yard in the 19th Century, latterly the site became a dairy from the mid 1900’s until early in the 21st century. The site was being transformed into student accommodation comprising 4 high rise
Due to both the sites former use and that of the surrounding properties there were significant contaminants that required remediation to enable the site to be developed. Firstly knotweed contaminated was widespread along the riverside of the development. This required excavation to remove the rhizomes and on site burial in a lined cell. Asbestos contained within the soil required removal from site Envirosaver licensed asbestos removal contractors and Neal Remediations sister company were brought in to provide a watching brief for the asbestos removal works and perimeter air monitoring was undertaken to monitor airborne fibers.
Arsenic and chloroform contamination was identified on site and in order to reduce the quantity disposed from site delineation testing was undertaken to ensure that disposal costs were kept to a minimum. The contaminated material was then taken to Neal Soils (another sister company) hazardous waste treatment facility in Cardiff, diverting the soils away from landfill and providing significant savings to the client in the process.
All on site concrete was processed to provide an aggregate for reuse on site as a piling mat saving on export of material from site and importation of a stone.
